The best burgers I’ve encountered travelling

After completing my Best Burger in Belfast piece, I thought about the best burgers I’ve encountered in general, as I’ve always tried to seek out “the best burger” in each city during my travels.

Plus, I love trying the fast food chains in the US that aren’t readily available to me at home.

I’ve sought out Five Guys, Wendy’s, Fatburger, In-N-Out etc in the hope of finding the best, and truthfully, only one American chain is in that conversation.

And we’ll start with that chain.

In-N-Out 🇺🇸

Excuse the blur, or don’t.

Normally when celebrities hype something, it’s not as good as imagined. In-N-Out is the exception. Opened in 1948, it slowly expanded throughout California, and now has spread across the South West USA, with further expansion planned.

A classic burger, next to the “Flying Dutchman” from the secret menu, which uses onions rather than bread on the outside.

In an unusual packaging choice during the 1980s, when the then president became a born again Christian, he started putting bible citations on the packaging. And when a burger tastes that good, it can print whatever it wants on the packaging.

Gasoline Grill 🇩🇰

Not the original Gasoline Grill, but the crowd is a good indication of how tasty you can expect the burger to be

With 9 stores dotted around Copenhagen, this is a must try should you ever visit Denmark’s capital. The first Gasoline Grill opened in 2016 in an old gas station, and the rest is history.

Whilst it’s mostly salad you can see in the photo, you can rest assured there’s plenty of meat in there too.

The burger is delicious from first bite to last, so juicy, so tasty. Even reminiscing about it is heavenly.

Bürgermeister 🇩🇪

We arrived shortly after opening time to the original Bürgermeister, and there was already a decent sized crowd munching away at their burgers

With 11 stores around Berlin, and plans for further expansion further afield, the first Bürgermeister opened in a disused public toilet in 2006 (and you thought an old gas station was niche).

Prior to the various chains opening up, there was constantly a queue of locals at the old toilet, which shows you you’re in for a treat.

CURB Burger 🇵🇹

For 6 years, Curb Burger has been supplying Porto’s residents with the. I came to Porto thinking nothing would make it to my top tier of burgers, but CURB pleasantly surprised me. Operating out of an unassuming location, you’d easily miss it.

The meat melts in your mouth, each bite makes the meat so moorish. A phenomenal, phenomenal burger worth travelling to Porto alone to try.

Bunsen Burger 🇮🇪

Last but not least, I cannot exclude an Irish burger from this list. Bunsen (which featured as one of my best in Belfast), this chain now boasts 11 stores across 3 Irish cities (Dublin, Belfast, and Cork), and I imagine more will follow suit in the not so distant future.

With the choice of having your patty cooked to your desired level, these burgers are amongst the best in Ireland, and perhaps the best available over multiple locations.

I’ll update this post sporadically should I encounter any burger worthy of taking a spot here. But only if they’re truly out of this world.
